Silicon fuel

Silicon fuel is a start-up, spun out from Oxford University. They have developed a unique silicon based powder which generates hydrogen via reaction with water: Silicon Fuel or simply SiF. Silicon Fuel acts like a catalyst splitting water generating hydrogen gas and silica with water being the source of hydrogen. Since SiF delivers hydrogen from water it can be considered as simple energy carrier being compact, safe and easy to transport.  Hydrogen gas produced from SiF has high purity and can be used for power generation through fuels cells or as duel fuel in internal combustion engines.  SiF can work with any type of water including sea water. The volumetric energy density of SiF systems is similar to LNG installations in a ship.
