Since 1999, LG Sonic is an international manufacturer of algae control and biofouling prevention systems. The LG Sonic marine product line provides environmentally friendly solutions to prevent biofouling in hulls, sea chests, bow thrusters, and other applications. Over the last decade, more than 10,000 LG Sonic products have been successfully installed in 52 different countries.

The build-up of biofouling on marine vessels poses a significant problem such as damages to the hull structure and operating systems. The marine industry globally spends billions of dollars in addressing fouling, using a variety of protection methods such as anti-fouling coatings that are based on chemical compounds. The use of these antifouling coatings can have negative impact on the environment. A greener marine future is needed, considering the marine biology, cleaner fuels, and energy wastage minimisation. By using environmentally friendly biofouling prevention solutions it is possible to reduce fuel consumption, and correspondingly CO2 emissions without harming the marine ecosystem.

To provide an environmentally friendly and effective solution to the biofouling problems, LG Sonic, developed a solution, the Ecohull. The solution is to deploy long range ultrasonic waves travelling throughout the steel plates of a ship’s hull in order to prevent and control biofouling. The use of continuous ultrasonic sounds waves prevents the accumulation of fouling by driving biomolecules away from the hull.
